The April 15, 2026 tax deadline has passed and you didn’t file on time. Before you panic, know this: you’re not alone, and the IRS does offer ways to fix it.
At Viera Services, we explain what happens if you file your taxes late in 2026 and how to handle IRS penalties wisely.
1. What happens when you don’t file on time
The IRS applies two main penalties:
Failure-to-File Penalty: Usually 5% of the unpaid tax per month, up to a maximum of 25%.
Failure-to-Pay Penalty: About 0.5% per month on the unpaid balance, also capped at 25%.
Both penalties start accumulating the day after April 15, and interest is added daily. Example: If you owed $1,000 and filed three months late, you could end up paying around $1,150 including penalties and interest.
2. File your return, even if you’re late
Even if you missed the deadline, filing as soon as possible is critical. By filing, you reduce the failure-to-file penalty, stop additional interest from growing as fast, and become eligible for payment plans.
Important: If you are due a refund, there is no penalty for filing late, but you only have three years to claim it.
3. Can’t pay in full? Request a payment plan
If you can’t pay everything at once, the IRS offers flexible options:
Short-Term Payment Plan: If you can pay in 180 days or less (no setup fee).
Long-Term Installment Agreement: Monthly payments over time.
These can be requested online or through a tax professional.
4. Ask for penalty relief
In some cases, you may qualify for First-Time Penalty Abatement if this is your first time being late and you have a clean history. The IRS may also waive penalties due to reasonable cause, such as illness or serious circumstances.
5. When to get professional help
You should seek professional support if your debt is over $5,000 or if you received an IRS notice. A tax professional can file your late returns properly, request payment plans, and explore options for reducing penalties.
Filing late doesn’t mean there’s no solution. What matters is taking action and not ignoring the problem.
